Perth Inner City Mayors get behind Containers for Change

Last week our Mayors met with not-for-profit WA Return Recycle Renew Ltd (WARRRL) CEO Tim Cusack to discuss Western Australia’s container deposit scheme.

Containers for Change commenced in 2020 and allows West Australians to take empty beverage containers covered by the scheme to a refund point to receive a refund of 10 cents.

Our Mayors spoke with Tim to understand how local governments can support increased community participation. A key challenge is how community members can dispose of containers consumed on the go, and in public spaces.

WARRRL is calling on all local governments across WA to help increase participation by:

  • Including Containers for Change in all event waste management plans to ensure empty beverage containers consumed at these events are recycled and their proceeds go to local charities.
  • Encouraging businesses to recycle their containers and utilise the Containers for Change service.
  • Placing Containers for Change bins or exchange points next to every general waste bin in public buildings and settings.

Each of the Perth Inner City local governments support a range of public places for container disposal and refund points across the region, also working closely with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) in efforts to reduce waste going to landfill.

WARRRL CEO Tim Cusack said: “We enjoy partnering with local governments to support and empower the community throughout this important program.”

“Thank you to the Perth Inner City Group for your ongoing support of Containers for Change – we look forward to working together more in the future.”
